People tend to think that we can be taken advantage of very easily.
But, people tend to really think they can take advantage of us. That can also make us seem even younger than we are. Harvin: Research. That is number one. I mean, [research everything] backwards, forwards, sideways, and upside down. Do your research going into anything and hold your own.
Also less is more. For example, we act broke now when we go into meetings. It was a total nightmare. Because we feel uncomfortable. We automatically over-compensate for the way we look, and our age. Let your [thick] skin be your best armor, and [conduct business] with a strong mind , a heavy hand, and a very steady voice. Meyer: You have to really learn to play hard ball, and that was a hard thing for us to do at first. I mean, you get screwed. It was so fun and the coolest thing that ever went down in our neighborhood!
We looked forward to these ghost rides. A few kids never came back to spend the night with us, but the majority of them could not get enough of our wizardly playground! HE : As you can see, we loved telling ourselves even at a young age that we could be anything that we wanted to be and both of our parents allowed us to believe that. Our dad made everything fun and our mom nursed us and nurtured us through everything we did.
We were happy creating and pretending to be whatever we wanted to be , just by using the things we had. ME : Our wealth was in our love for each other as a family and def not in our pocketbooks. Our parents did not come into money until much later in our lives. ME : It literally fell right into our laps. Well, actually my voicemail that I did not check for a good two weeks.
HE : Yea, when a casting crew touched down in the ATL we were a recommendation given to them by someone. They attempted to call Meyer first mistake and then left her a voicemail biggest mistake.
ME : Once I finally checked it, we called them bac k and a string of interviews were set into motion via phone calls, Skype, and in person. HE : Mom decided that she was cool with the idea, nervous, but up for the possible adventure of reality television.
A fter the numerous interviews , we just waited to hear back. ME : A couple of months later we received a phone call congratulating us for being chosen as cast members of the Style Network show Big Rich Atlanta.
BC: Very exciting! How could you even begin to prepare for that? HE : We did not have a clue as to what to expect when filming a reality television show. We knew it was going to be our first rodeo and there was no telling what would come out of it, but we crossed our fingers and just hoped that we would like ourselves in the television as much as we did in real life.
You never can be sure ya know laughs. BC: Was the experience of being on Reality Television what you thought it would be after you saw the show air or during filming? HE : During filming i t was more than we expected! There were so many crew members and it was such organized chaos. It blew our minds. I was fascinated with how they functioned as these large team machines. It was amazing!
They became like family and then furniture with a camera. When they had their cameras off their shoulders we would all be smiling or laughing and even though you do not talk to the cameramen directly that much, we all had this unexplainable bond.
They knew us and we became to get so used to them being around. It was like they were living furniture. You knew they were there but you completely forgot about them. They moved when we moved but it was almost no different than getting used to new wallpaper.
Every time you walk in the door for the first several days you notice it immediately and then after that it just blends in and becomes the norm. We loved the production crew. We had the blues when we wrapped and they left. The producers were amazing in every way. We felt very comfortable talking to them and even arguing with them every once in a while laughs.
BC: Was it weird when the camera crew was done filming? ME : Yea, we were depressed when they left. I really miss the crafty box of snacks they always had and just the sense that your life i s fill ed with people in it all the time and we got used to that.
HE : Once they left it was s ooooo quiet. Somehow we find comfort in chaos and loved the non-stop interaction we had with them and our cast members. It was a sense of camaraderie and we enjoyed that. ME : There were some amazing people that we really got close to.
We still miss them. We would even notice if one cameraman or lighting crew member changed for a particular day.
BC: Anything fun that you are willing to share? ME : Bud was ridic that night. She had tooooooo much champagne!!! When you gotta go, you gotta go , damn. ME : Wel l thank God they cut that out of the episode! ME : It is interesting to see all the quirks about yourself when watching it back on television.
Like we make the craziest faces ever sometimes. Some of them do not look hot at all. HE : Overall, they pretty much captured who we really are without a doubt.
Yes, things are edited so they keep certain parts and not others, but ALL of the things were done whether they made the cut for television or not. It becomes an exaggerated version of yourself because its like a highlight reel of all the things that went down over a matter of months and then wrapped up into several one hour episodes. BC: In what ways has it changed your lives? We hide it from you every week and you find it or buy another one.
HE : Other than that, we have to keep ourselves up more often grooming and all because we do not want to have zit cream on our faces and have to snap a pic with a fan at the grocery store and stuff like that.
We make sure that we personally respond back to all of them as much as humanly possible. Even if it means spending over four hours a day and really late nights getting back to as many of them as we can. They are really important to us and we do not take any of them for granted. The support we have received has been magical, encouraging and super exciting.
We love these people. We so often refer to them as friends instead of fans. BC: It sounds like you both are very grateful and down to earth! HE : It has also been a humbling experience. For all of these people to take interest in our lives and to join in our passion for the fashion brand, lifestyle and perspective of She Blames Me creates a feeling that even words would not do justice. ME : We spend tons of time doing interviews, working on She Blames Me, responding to people wanting to connect with us, attending various events, and managing to design as much as possible throughout it all.
BC: After watching the show was there any thing that you regretted and if so what? Also, I regretted doing the art show a t the time, but not as much now.
It stung like hell, but I feel like my fears about showing my art have dwindled just a little bit because nothing could have gone any worse that night. I always regret some of the things I say to Meyer in our most heated arguments so that part is an ongoing thing. We argue every hour and then make up ten seconds later.
ME : I do not regret much of anything other than not brushing my hair out after the Halloween party. Instead, I went out with friends after the party, slept with that wild hair, and then came to work the next day with the largest rats nest you have ever seen. Best Halloween costume ever! It looked like a tornado hit her directly in the head and left nothing behind nothing but a busted bleach blonde mess!
ME : I regret the hand slip I had outside of the kickboxing class too. I felt bad. She was making me so frustrated and mad though. I do regret it. BC:Who are you friends with from the show when the camera isn't rolling? HE : I am very close with both Ashlee and Meagan. I talk to both of them every single day just about.
Ash and I will stay up all night talking sometimes. It was my first time making one myself. Meagan will come and hang out and even spend the night every now and then. Its really funny actually because while we were filming me, Meyer, and Meagan would all end up in the same bed together on several occasions even though there were alway s like ten more beds we could of had to ourselves.
We all go out to various bars and clubs together too. HE : We are! Ash and I will talk about everything under the sun and even the most random things and laugh until we are crying.
She will bring her dog Winnie over to play with our dogs Milo Wilo and Freck the Wreck and we just relax and talk.
She helps me get knotted extensions out every now and then, we make middle of the night fast food runs together, borrow each others things, you know… stuff regular friends do. Meagan and I will go out together and then have days where we hash out business stuff like what we are planning for this, that, and the other.
Our house has like a revolving door. We have people in and out non- stop. Our friends know they are always welcome over here. We have them over ALL the time and love it. Some of us cast have gotten MUCH closer after the show wrapped.
For me those people would be Ashlee and Meagan.
